Are we too self-sufficient?

We really do want to be self-sufficient people and our modern culture of overnight or same-day delivery is feeding into our desire to be self-sufficient. It also feeds our impatience and desire to get what we want, when we want it. I’ll admit, I fall into this myself. We naturally don’t like to wait, we naturally don’t want to be in need. Being in need is uncomfortable and vulnerable. We know from God’s Word that He will supply all of our needs in Philippians 4:19. But it doesn’t say we won’t have wants. Being in want and learning to wait develops patience in us.

Instead of allowing someone to bring us a meal when they offer, we would rather get food delivered. If someone offers to help you if you need anything we say we’re fine and just order it instead. Instead of asking for a recipe, we find it online. Instead of asking for help to learn a new skill, we just find a tutorial online. Our self-sufficient culture is suppressing the Biblical principle of caring for the practical needs for others and building a real community. And possibly even preventing people from helping and caring for you. Let yourself be helped, allow someone to come bring you the meal, or pick up something at the store for you. And do the same for others in return! You might be surprised at how much it blesses both you and the giver.
